Gongchenqiao Residential District, Gongshu, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China
Description
Gongchen Bridge is located at the northern end of Gongshu District, Hangzhou, with Taizhou Road in the east and Qiaolong Street in the west. It was built in the fourth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the eleventh year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. The bridge is 92 meters long and 5.9 meters wide. The bridge body is built with stone staggered joints, and the long lock stone runs through it. The bridge deck is softly curved, and it is a three-hole stone arch bridge. The "Chen" in Gongchen Bridge means the palace of the emperor, and the tall arched stone bridge symbolizes the welcome and respect to the emperor, hence the name of the bridge. In 1895, after the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed, Hangzhou was listed as a trading port. In 1896, Yangguan was established here. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Yangguan was abolished. The name of the current Gongchen Bridge has evolved into the name of the directional area.
