Description

Xi'an Yu Youren Former Residence Museum is located at No. 52, Shuyuanmen, Xi'an (formerly No. 20 and No. 30). It was built in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Yu Youren's second brother Yu Xiaoxian (Zi Baixing) bought it as a family residence, and it has been more than 100 years old. The former residence is three rooms wide and 80 meters deep, covering an area of more than 800 square meters and a construction area of 500 square meters. It consists of a gatehouse, garden, hall, wing room, upper room, and backyard. It is a three-courtyard brick-wood structure.

Since 1937, Yu Youren's first wife Gao Zhonglin and eldest daughter Yu Zhixiu have lived here. When he returned to his hometown, he often lived here. In 1971 and 1972, the mother and daughter died here one after another. In his later years, Yu Youren wrote many poems to commemorate his wife and daughter who lived here.

In 2002, with the proposal of 13 deputies to the People's Congress of Xi'an and the strong support of the central, provincial and municipal leaders, the preparation for the reconstruction of the former residence began. Yu Youren's nephew Yu Long and his wife Zhang Ying successively invested more than 10 million yuan, and by October 2008, part of the reconstruction project was completed. In 2009, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Yu Youren's birth, the residence was completed and opened.
